When Marcy came to the Woman at the Well House on December 26, 2006, she did not know that, upon her departure, she would leave a legacy to the ministry as well as the neighborhood. Her legacy? The Acts of Love Pet Project. Marcy graduated the WATW on June 10, leaving behind the project readers learned about in the March newsletter.
So what is the rest of the story? Another article about the Pet Project in The Church News Episcopal newsletter captured the attention of Seguin veterinarian Dr. William C. Campaigne who called us to volunteer any treatment needed by the cats. So Marcy took the cats to Dr. Campaigne. The visit was both funny and sad as we learned that Magic, the female, was determined to be a neutered male instead, and beloved Bushwa was terminally ill with feline AIDS. Dr. Campaigne euthanized Bushwa and gave Magic all of HIS shots. The doctor also volunteered his help to any other animals who adopted the WATW. Another stray cat, Persia, came to call and has now had her visit to Dr. Campaigne. Although Persia no longer comes to visit, she was released into the neighborhood spayed, vaccinated, and in fine health.
Generosity seems to create its own energy. Dr. Campaigne has long been a generous giver, spending his time, energy, and money working with the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, Honduras. He spearheaded a drive to add a surgical wing to the La Materna birthing center in that country to handle serious and complicated deliveries. Because of Dr. Campaigne's generosity, the WATW saved money on the needs of the cats in the Acts of Love Pet Project, so a small donation has been made by the WATW to the La Materna project in Dr. Campaigne's name.
