History
The Woman at the Well House was started in 1995 by Reverend Georgia Stone, a United Methodist minister. During her prison ministry at the Bexar County jail, she witnessed the challenges faced when women were newly released. Observing female prisoners often released at night with nowhere to go and no resources, lead to the establishment of the Woman at the Well House. The residents at Woman at the Well House are mostly ex-offenders with non-violent felony convictions related to drugs and alcohol.
Woman at the Well House provides its residents an environment which is warm and safe, sustenance with nutritional food, and clothing if needed. A licensed chemical dependency counselor meets with each resident individually and in group sessions. Residents are referred to community resources for medical health, mental health, and dental health needs. Educational/Vocation needs are also addressed through collaborative partnerships for GED, college or vocational education as well as job placement. Residents participate in the six-month in-house program outlined below.
